Hummer in the rain

We have only a few winter residents this year.  Although, the weather has been mild enough so far, evidently there’s better food sources elsewhere.

A friend of mine who lives a bit further up in the hills (where they occasionally get snow) has an abundance of hummy’s this winter.  So, I can find no logical reason they’d migrate from here, and not from there, except that their trees are also abundant.  They cleared the little grove of trees next to us a couple of springs ago, so perhaps trees have something to do with it.

Anyway, here’s one of our resident feeder-hoggers.  I’ve only got two feeders up for the winter, and this guy and another one seem to have elected themselves “management” and they spend their days chasing off interlopers.

It’s much easier keeping up with the feeders – although I make sure I don’t fill them all the way just in case we have a freeze some nights.  Still, I’m looking forward to the hoards again.  It’s so enjoyable watching them raise their youngsters and teach them the ins and outs of feeders…so to speak.
