A small success this summer has been this sunflower. Last year I planted a few just straight into our ground, one of them grew to the size of a daisy, and the rest just plain died. This year, the difference has been that I add mulch at the base frequently. It’s still pretty small as sunflowers go, but it’s taller than me and has a nice flower opening this week.
Last week it was even sporting a bit of garden jewelry.
I guess it’s a small praying mantis – my uncle tells me there are much larger ones in other parts of the country. I’m thinking I’m glad I live out west.

It is lovely Cathi. The birds will be thrilled with it too when it matures.
Cathi, I truly enjoyed reading your blog. It represents a good glimpse of life in the gold country. We have shared some of your gardening experiences but we have not had the problem with deer. I guess we have too many houses around us here. We do get wild turkeys but so far they have not gotten into anything important. Keep up the good work on your family blog, I will bookmark it so I can visit it again.
